Hog Island Water Association Septic Application

We were asked by an Islander to put the following information on the Web. This mailing was sent only to those within 200' of the project. We assume that all members of the Hog Island Community know about this, but there are others who may be interested.

What a novel idea - a septic system near the public drinking supply! Note at the bottom of the first page the claim of 4 events per year, 30 people per event. Hmmm.

Also at the annual meeting of the HIWA, it was proposed that the pump should be powered by electric (solar) rather than propane, because propane was too difficult to transport. The administration never mentioned that the electric wasn't for the drinking water pump, but for the septic system!

The deadline for comments is Friday, December 1st; any communications should be sent to the Chief of the Office of Water Resources, RI Department of Environmental Management, Office of Water Resources / ISDS Section, 235 Promenade St, Providence RI 02908.

Rental Wanted

Elizabeth Hunt, Fran and Dick Hunt's granddaughter, would like to rent a cottage for a week or so during this summer. Please contact her if you have one available.

Update - 29 September

Here is a gorgeous picture of the Boathouse during Hurricane Carol - talk about a tidal surge! Click on it to enlarge. Used by permission of Jeff Lake - thank you Jeff!

This is where the great migration to the Island began! (click below to enlarge)

At the time, 50'x100' lots were as low as $100. Now, they're worth at least $7,500!

Hog Island is a 200-acre island, located in Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. There are approximately 120 houses on the Island. Hog Island is similar to rural parts of Maine, in that there is no electricity (unless one has a generator), seasonal running water, and propane appliances. Access is by water only; there are no bridges.

Although many cottages are seasonal, there are quite a few of us hardy souls who use our places year around. Some of us find the Island takes on a whole different feel when the parties and summer hubbub leave, and nature comes out in force.

On these pages, you will find some history about the Island, see some pictures of the area and, in general, learn about life on Hog Island.

As with all communities, so-called progress and change can bring about some conflict. One such conflict is occurring at the present, between different groups on the Island, regarding how the Island is governed and represented by and for the Town of Portsmouth, under whose jurisdiction the Island is (at least, that's where we pay our taxes!). If you are interested in these issues, please see the "Legal Issues" pages for more information.
